Have you heard of barefoot or minimalist shoes? I didn’t either until a few months ago. Barefoot shoes have various health benefits. Our entire body is supported by our feet, so naturally, it makes sense to put a lot of attention and thought into the shoes we wear. Throughout this post, I will share with you the reasons why I switched and why I think you should consider it too (along with a few recommendations).
Reasons why I switched:
From an early age, I have always been active. By the time I got to middle school sports, I began to have terrible knee and hip pain. We found out that I have a vitamin d deficiency. Even though I started taking supplements, I still struggled with the pain. I thought the pain would be my new norm. I knew I needed to find a new solution when wearing shoes with arch support hurt worst than wearing flats. However, right before this past Christmas, I was looking for a new pair of work shoes when I stumbled upon some TikTok videos about barefoot shoes. I learned everything I could and then bought a very affordable pair from Amazon. Once I started, I couldn’t go back. The moment I would put on a non-barefoot shoe, I felt the pain slowly creeping in. It has been around 5 months since I began my barefoot journey and I am so glad that I decided to give it a shot. My knees feel stronger and I rarely have restless nights with knee and hip pain.
Reasons why you should consider:
Reduce knee and hip pain
When your body is aligned how it is designed to be, everything works together seamlessly. Barefoot shoes focus on the natural design of our body and work together with it, not against it.

Better posture and balance
Due to the zero drop attribution of barefoot shoes, your body's alignment isn’t thrown off balance which causes your body to be able to function and move naturally.

Strengthens your feet and legs
Regular shoes with arch support do all the work for you so over time the muscles in your feet get weaker. They also squish your toes together so you are unable to have a full range of motion. With barefoot shoes, you can actively strengthen your feet’ muscles which in turn will strengthen your legs.

Supports pelvic health
This is especially important for women as pelvic issues can lead to infertility. When our bodies are aligned, they can perform the way they were meant to
Reduces the chances of injuries
Many issues stem from the feet since they carry the body’s weight. You have to make sure you have a good foundation to build on. By strengthening them you reduce the chances of injury.
